OBAMA SHOULD APOLOGISE FOR 60 YEARS OF ‘CRIMES’: AHMADINEJAD

The Daily Telegraph

IRANIAN President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad demanded on Wednesday that us president barrack Obama apologise for the “crimes” committed by the united states against Iran over the past 60 years.

The hard line leader also called on Washington to withdraw its troops from across the world as a proof of Mr. Obama’s commitment to change.

“You were standing against the Iranian people in the past 60 years,” ahmadinejad said during an address in the western region of khermenshah that was broadcast by state television.

“Those who speak of change must apologise to the Iranian people and try to repair their past bad acts and the crimes they committed against Iran.”

As to the troops, he said he expected two kinds of “deep and fundamental” change.

“Meet people, talk to them with respect and put an end to the expansionist policies. If you talk about change it must put an end to the US military presence in the world, withdraw your troops and take them back inside your borders.”

Ahmadinejad said the advocates of change must “stop supporting the Zionists, outlaws and criminals”. He called on the United States to “stop interfering in other people’s affairs”.

He also said the US government should “let the American people decide their own future stop pressuring them,” he added, without saying what he was referring to.

Ahmadinejad said he welcomed change but the “change has to be fundamental.”

“If someone wants to talk with us in the language that (George W) bush used even if he uses new words, our response will be the same that we gave to bush during the past years,” he added.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran has been high over the latter’s nuclear programme.

Bush refused to hold talks with Iran until it stopped its nuclear work, but on Monday Obama extended a diplomatic hand towards Tehran to break the deadlock.

In an interview with Al-Arabia television, Obama promised to lay a framework for his policy towards Iran.

“As I said on my inauguration speech, if countries like Iran are willing to unclench their first, they will find an extended hand from us.

“It is very important for us to make sure that we are using all the tools of US power, including diplomacy, in our relationship with Iran.”

Also on Monday, Washington’s UN ambassador, Susan Rice, pledged “direct” support to Tehran if it halts the nuclear programme.

UN: world unemployment could rise by 40 million

Geneva: The global economic downturn could see 40 million more people lose their jobs by the end of the year, taking the unemployment rate to its highest in a decade, the UN labour agency said on Wednesday. The number of unemployed in 2009 will largely depend on how effective government’s economic stimulus measures are, the international labour organization cautioned. Worldwide unemployment by be end of the year will range between 210 million and 230 million people, the agency said in its annual global employment trends report. That is a marked
Increase on the 179 million who were unemployed at the end of 2007 and the estimated 190 million at the end of 2008, the ILO said. The worst case scenario assumes growth slows rapidly and that an economic recovery will be delayed into 2010.

Israeli activists protest ‘inhuman’ treatment of Gaza prisoners

Jerusalem: seven Israeli human rights groups demanded an inquiry on Wednesday into the “human” treatment meted out to Palestinians taken prisoner during Israel’s offensive on the Gaza strip. Evidence collected from detainees provided a “shocking portrayal of the harsh, inhuman and degrading conditions in which Palestinian prisoners were held during the initial days of their incarceration,” they said in a statement. “Many detainees-minors as well as adults were held for many hours, sometimes for days, in pits dug in the ground, exposed to bitter cold and harsh weather, handcuffed and blindfolded. “These pits lacked basic sanitary facilities detainees went hungry. “Some of the detainees were held near tanks and in combat areas, in gross violation of international humanitarian law. “The groups submitted a complaint to Israel’s attorney general and the military judge advocate general, urging an independent and comprehensive investigation.

Petrol Vs Poll

Oil prices rose on Wednesday after U.S. government data showed draws in gasoline and distillate inventories and OPEC vowed to fully implement its steep supply cuts by the end of the month.

U.S. crude settled at $42.16 a barrel, up 58 cents, after plunging 9 percent on Tuesday as bleak U.S. economic data stirred demand concerns.

London Brent settled at $44.90, up $1.17.

Oil prices climbed after data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed a 1-million-barrel draw in distillate stocks last week as cold weather hit the U.S. Northeast, the world's top heating oil market, and a surprise 100,000 barrel fall in gasoline supplies.

"It looks like the products are kind of stabilizing the whole complex right now," said Tom Bentz, senior commodity analyst at BNP Paribas Commodity Futures, Inc in New York.

Crude stocks rose sharply, however, up 6.2 million barrels, as refiners facing weak fuel demand slowed operations.

"Another flood of crude. We are getting overwhelmed by crude," said Phil Flynn, analyst at Alaron Trading in Chicago.

U.S. crude stocks have risen more than 44 million barrels in the past four months, the biggest four-month increase since 1990, according to EIA data, as refiners put oil in storage instead of into processing units.

Oil prices also recieved a boost from remarks by OPEC Secretary General Abdullah al-Badri at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that even an oil price of $50 a barrel was too low to encourage investment in new supply and added that the cartel would fully enforce supply curbs by the end of this month.

OPEC has agreed to shave some 4.2 million barrels per day of production since September to counter the free-fall in oil prices from record peaks over $147 in July.

Oil also found support as Wall Street rallied following the Federal Reserves announcement that it was prepared to buy longer-term Treasuries to improve credit market condition.

"There was a stock market rally on the FOMC statement, and crude futures rallied as well. The underlying hope is that with the FOMC's stated goals, the economy would improve and with that demand for oil would improve as well. But everybody knows we are long way from that, and that realization spurred some late selling," Andy Lebow, a broker at MF Global in New York said.

Traders had also been watching for the Federal Reserves decision on official borrowing costs, which the Fed held in a range of zero to 0.25 percent, as
