Gagan breaks into top five in ISSF rankings
Hyderabad: Ace shooter Gagan Narang broke into the top five in the latest men’s air rifle world rankings issued by the ISSF (International Shooting Sports Federation). The Hyderabad-based shooter recently had won gold in the World Cup final at Bangkok and had also set new world record in the process. “I am happy to break into the top 5 in the world rankings in the New Year, my aim this year is to be World No1 once again,” he said.
Abhijeet wins, Sasi loses at Corus chess
Wijk aan zee: On a mixed day for the Indians world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta came back into reckoning for top honours with a ninth-round win in C Group but K Sasikiran suffered a defeat in the B Group of the Corus International Chess Tournament here. Abhijeet scored a fine positional triumph over veteran grandmaster Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine but Sasikiran lost to David Navara of Czech Republic. Abhijeet now has 5.5 points.
Basketball player Akhtar no more
Mumbai: Former Maharashtra and Indian Railways basketball player Javed Akhtar died here on Wednesday. He was 58 and is survived by wife and three sons. Akhtar who became a sports journalist after his basketball career, passed away due to a malignant stomach tumor.
Mixed luck for TNSA sailors in Kochi
Kochi: It was a day of mixed fortunes for the leading TNSA sailors. Rufus Patrick started the day well with a first position in Race 4, but slipped to 5th and 7th in the next two races at the sailing championship here. The day undoubtedly belonged to Aman Vyas from NSS Bhopal, who sailed well to finish first in the races 5 and 6 to end up 3rd overall.
