Cancer on the rise

The trend of cancer incidence is generally increasing for most of the common cancers, especially tobacco related cancers. According to a press release by the department of Cancer at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research centre Madurai on the occasion of World Cancer Day, the most common cancers among the males are that of the head and neck especially oral cavity followed by stomach lung and esophagus. The order among females is uterine cervix, head and neck especially oral cavity and hypopharynx, breast, and ovary.

Cancer screening (testing for cancer when the person has no recognized signs or symptoms of that disease) is advocated on a regular basis. The purpose of screening is not merely to diagnose cancer, but rather to help peop0le live better and longer because of earlier detection.

World Cancer Day is observed on the 4th of February every year to increase awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. The date was declared World Cancer Day’ to mark the anniversary of the first World Summit against Cancer in Paris in 2000, at which a global charter against cancer was launched. It is led by the International Union against Cancer (UICC), a global consortium of more than 280 cancer-fighting organizations in over 90 countries. World Cancer Day targets the public through global communications, and encourages policy makers and UICC member organizations to make cancer a political priority.

The campaign emphasizes that 43% of cancers can be prevented by providing a smoke-free environment for children, advocating regular exercise and healthy diet, avoiding obesity, getting educated about vaccines for virus-related liver and cervical cancers, and avoiding over-exposure to the sun.

The four major types of cancer treatments available today include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and biologic therapies.

New treatments, such as hormone therapies and transplant options involving bone marrow, are being added to these standard procedures on a regular basis. Modern imaging has revolutionized the various treatment techniques aiding in higher cure and overall survival rates. The best treatment a cancer patient can get is the out come of combined decision made by all the three sub specialities such as Radiation, Medical, and Surgical Oncology.

This widespread availability of cancer experimentation and treatment option causes confusion not only among the public, but among physicians and patients as well.

Every day, new option appears on the sphere that shows promise, but only a few become treatment protocols.
