The Nutritious Noon Meal Scheme

A lot of people in our country are still in the grips of poverty. Children from such families are denied even a square meal a day. It has been estimated that 40,000 children in India go blind every year from malnutrition. The tragedy that strikes the little ones should not go unchecked. So the nutritious noon meal scheme was introduced in Tamil Nadu to lift up our children from hunger, starvation and disease. Under this scheme children in the age limit of two and sixteen are given free noon meal. At first the scheme was started with the help of teachers. Later the government appointed organizers to carry out this scheme. At present about forty two lakhs of children are fed through the noon meal centre. For each child 100 grams of rice, 15 grams of dhal and 7 grams of oil are given every day. Great care is taken in the preparation of the meal. Green leafy vegetables are used adequately. So the meal served is not only tasty but also nutritious. The children who come to the meal centre are not allowed to spend idle hours. They are taught Thirukurals. The organizers help them to recite Thirukurals. Thus physical development goes hand in hand with mental development. The government spends about 156 crores of rupees every year on this scheme. The nutritious meal scheme has given employment to thousands of widows and economically backward people. The success of this scheme is so spectacular that our neighboring states are planning to emulate us. Thanks to this scheme no child in our state goes hungry. Children are happier and healthier now. No wonder, the implementation of this scheme is a milestone in the history of Tamil Nadu.
